Sleep, exercise, nutrients are some biological needs of our body for survival; Similarly, our heart and soul need proper nourishment, which is attained through Quran.
Quran for the Soul; How Quran Nourishes Your Soul
Quranic teachings inspire the soul and change the heart.
Read the Quran
Recitation of the Quran increases faith. It soothes the heart and comforts the soul. Recitation is an act in which the whole body must participate-the heart, tongue, mind, and soul.
Read the Quran daily, even if it is a few verses. Contemplate on the words of this precious book even if it is an ayah a day.
Allah (SWT) mentions this beautifully in the following verse.
“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:2)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Beautify the Qur’an with your voices.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 1468)
Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying,
“Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 991).
Change Through The Quran
Quran cures the diseases of the heart such as jealousy, nifaq (hypocrisy), and boastfulness. Do a self-evaluation and frequent self-checks:
- How do I feel when Quran is recited?
- Do the words affect me?
- Am I a better person now than before?
- Do I act upon the teachings of the Quran?
- Do I take Quran as my guide?
- Do I turn to Salah and Quran when faced with difficulties and calamities?
“Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord – to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:1)
Positive Effects Of Recitation
Quranic recitation and contemplation must bring about a positive change in us. Just like water softens the hard ground and makes it suitable for plants to grow, similarly, Quran should be changing and moving our hearts continually. If we are not improving, we must check ourselves as to why this is happening.
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:28)
Quranic recitation improves memory, concentration and is a cure for numerous physical and mental health problems.
“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:82)

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, “Indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (Surah Fussilat, 41:33)
Shahr bin Haushab (R) reported:
I asked Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her), “O Mother of the Believers! Which supplication did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) make frequently when he was in your house?”
She said: “He (ﷺ) supplicated frequently: ‘Ya muqallibal-qulubi, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinika’
“O Controller of the hearts make my heart steadfast in Your religion”
(At- Tirmidhi, Riyad as-Salihin 14)
