Due to the evolving technology, we don’t have to take the Mushaf with us everywhere we go, we could simply read from the mobile, but here comes the important question, can you read Quran without wudu on phone? That’s what we will find out shortly.
can you read Quran without wudu on phone? Yes, you can read the Quran on your phone without Wudu. The ruling of wudu is applied if you are reading from the Mushaf (Quran) itself, but if you are reading from the mobile or listening to Quran you don’t have to perform Wudu.
Now let’s find out what the scholars said about this topic.
Can you read Quran without wudu on phone?
The Mushaf is not the same as reading the Quran from the phone, they both come under different ruling. You can read the Quran anytime from your phone without Wudu.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Naasir al-Barraak says that it is permissible to recite the Quran from memory without performing Wudu. But it is always better to purify oneself before reading Quran to show respect to the words of Allah.
There is a hadith stating that in order to touch the Quran you should be in a state of purity. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:
“No one should touch the Quran but one who is pure.”
But listening to the recording of the Quran, reading from the smartphone, or reading from the laptop; they all don’t fall under the ruling of reciting from Mushaf.
So, yes, you read Quran without wudu on your phone and touch the verses on the screen too. And it is a great way to recite Quran anywhere even if you don’t carry a Mushaf with you.

Do I have to perform Wudu to read Quran from the laptop?
In the past, there was no such thing as phones or laptops, so in order to recite Quran. They had to perform Wudu first. That’s why when you search for hadith on that topic you won’t find an answer.
However, we now have laptops, tablets, and smartphones. All of which made it easier for us to recite Quran at any time and anywhere. It’s okay to recite Quran from these devices without ablution but it is better to perform Wudu first.
Can You Learn Reading Quran Online Without Wudu?
Yes, you can learn to read Quran online without Wudu as long as you are not touching a Mushaf. Mostly in the online courses, the verses will be visible on the screen. And you won’t need to hold the Mushaf. So, it is okay to learn Quran online without Wudu.
However; if you can perform Wudu before the course then it would be better to do so. To show respect to the words of Allah.
Try your best to always be in a state of purity. And am not just talking about reading the Quran, but at all times. Perform Wudu before you go out or before going to bed. Even if you’re not going to read Quran or perform prayers.
Can You Recite the Quran Without Wudu from memory?
Yes, if you managed to memorize the holy Quran then you don’t have to read it from the Mushaf. Hence, you don’t have to perform Wudu before reciting it from memory.
However, if you can perform Wudu first then do so. Because it is better this way to show respect to Allah and the Holy Quran.
Can I read the Quran from the Mushaf without Wudu?
To answer this question let’s see what the Quran says about this matter.
“Indeed, this is truly a noble Quran, In a Register well-protected; None touch it except the purified.”(56:77-79)
Allah told us in this verse that no one should touch the Mushaf without Wudu. And all the scholars agree that in order to touch the Mushaf you should be in the state of Wudu.
If you are wondering what is Mushaf, Mushaf is the real copy of the Quran (physical form of the Quran). You can’t handle or touch the Quran with your hands if you didn’t perform Wudu. But you can hold it with something in between.
How did the technology make our Quran recitation easier?
In the past there was no other way to read the Quran but the Mushaf and if you are not in the state of Wudu or if you don’t carry a Mushaf with you then you won’t be able to recite Quran.
Meanwhile, all you need to recite Quran is a smartphone with a Quran App on it. Technology didn’t just make it easier for us to recite Quran at any time; but also, we can learn the right recitation through many Apps and free courses. All you have to do is to download a Quran learning App or find an online free course and watch it.
Can you see the difference now? Due to the technology, we can recite the Quran at any time, anywhere, for example, let’s say you are stuck in the traffic or waiting for the lecture to start, wouldn’t it be better to use this free time to come closer to Allah and recite Quran?
What is the scholars’ opinion on reading Quran without wudu?
All the scholars agreed that reading the Quran from the Mushaf without Wudu is not permissible. But It is okay to recite Quran from the memory of reading it from the smartphone or laptop without Wudu because the ruling of Wudu doesn’t apply here.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Baz was asked about Touching and reciting the Quran without wudu, and his answer was:
“It is not permissible for a Muslim to touch the Quran when he does not have wudu, according to the majority of scholars. This is the view of the four imams (may Allah be pleased with them), and this was the view expressed in the fatwas of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
A sahih hadith concerning that has been narrated from ‘Amr ibn Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him), stating that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wrote to the people of Yemen: “No one should touch the Quran except one who is Tahir (pure).” This is a jayyid hadith which has a number of other isnads which strengthen it.”
From this we understand that holding the Mushaf (Quran) without Wudu is a big mistake, no one should touch the Mushaf unless he/she is in a state of purity.
Also, some people move the Quran from one place to another without Wudu and that’s also not permissible. To handle the Mushaf from one place to another you should be in the state of Wudu.
However, if you are not in the state of Wudu and you want to move the Quran then you can hold it with something, don’t touch the Quran with your hand.
According to the views of the majority of scholars and the Quran itself, the Mushaf shouldn’t be touched without Wudu.
The scholars also said that it is okay to recite it from memory, from a mobile Application, or listen to it without Wudu. Also, when someone asks you to correct his recitation and you are not in the state of Wudu then read the Quran while the other person is holding the Mushaf for you.
You can read Quran from its English translation without wudu too, the ruling of wudu is only applied when you read from the Quran otherwise you don’t have to perform Wudu. Allah says In the Holy Quran:
None touch it except the purified. [Qur`an 56: 79]
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to read the Quran from memory all the time and didn’t let anything stop him from doing so.
When Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak was asked about this matter his reply was:
“It is well known that it is not essential to be free from minor impurity when reciting Quran from memory, or even from major impurity, but purifying oneself before reciting Quran, even from memory, is better because it is the Word of Allah and it is more respectful towards Him to only recite it when in a state of purity.
When reading from the Mushaf it is essential to be in a state of purity in order to touch the Mushaf, because of what it says in the famous hadith: “No one should touch the Quran but one who is pure.” And because of what it says in many reports from the Sahaba and Tabi’in.
This is the view of the majority of scholars, which is that it is haram for one who is in a state of impurity to touch the Mushaf, whether that is for reading or otherwise.
Based on this, it seems that mobile phones and similar devices on which Quran may be recorded do not come under the same rules as the Mushaf because the letters of the Quran in these devices are different from the letters in the Mushaf.
They do not exist in the form in which they are read, rather they exist in the form of waves that form the letters when needed, so they appear on the screen and then disappear when one moves to another verse. Based on this, it is permissible to touch the mobile phone or tape on which Quran is recorded, and it is permissible to read from it, even if one is not in a state of purity. And Allah knows best.”
